Geoff Masland

Geoff Masland is interested in the tension between absence and presence, and the paradox of emptiness within excess. He uses paper collected from damaged and discarded books and periodicals withdrawn from circulation. The imagery in his artwork is self-reflective and explores his feelings around the history and imagined future of communities throughout Maine.

Spectral personalities and forms born from the content, inscriptions and margin notes of the dead books inhabit my process and become the figures, interiors, landscapes, and neighborhoods developing in a local, plausible nonreality.

He is one of the 35 artists to have been selected to have their works featured in the 2023 Center for Maine Contemporary Art Biennial exhibition. Geoff was also selected as a featured artist in New American Painting Issue 152–Northeast by juror Liz Munsell, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA.Born in 1981. His studio is located in Yarmouth, Maine.
