About The Show
Curated by Bruce Brown, Refined Resurgence features the photography of Tim Greenway.
Refined Resurgence explores progress and beauty in two contexts: South Portland’s petroleum tanks and the expanding cityscape of the Portland peninsula. With these photographs my hope is to provide a new way to view these familiar mundane environments that many consider eyesores - perhaps to provoke the viewer to see beauty and art in their own lives and environment.
The photographs were created during a two-year period beginning in the summer of 2019. I lived in Portland for 16 years and was witnessing the transformation of the peninsula and was compelled to document the rapid changes. The last day of 2019, I moved to South Portland into my first home which led me to photographing the tanks. I had always been intrigued how the tanks blended into the landscape creating a unique juxtaposition of the tanks amongst schools and residential neighborhoods.
A few months later the pandemic struck and upended our lives. Portland was empty during the lockdown, and the construction workers who continued to raise the new buildings were some of the few signs of life that one could see in the city. Today, people have now returned to the peninsula and discovered an altered skyline, along with some of their favorite views now blocked by those buildings. During the early months of the lockdown, as my commercial photography slowed and exhibitions were put on hold, my regular visits to the construction sites and the petroleum tanks provided a healthy escape — they gave me purpose and structure. - Tim Greenway
