Tom Paiement
Tom Paiement is a long-standing member in the stable of artists represented by Greenhut Galleries. His personal and artistic curiosity, coupled with backgrounds in mechanical engineering, and music, and certainly visual art -- beginning with a strong printmaking background studying under deceased maestro Mauricio Lasansky, has allowed him to diligently pursue his unique muse in a variety of individual ways.
The works exhibited here represent two separate series of works that have occupied his time over the years. In the case of Back Bay, the use of LEDs in his work has allowed him to pursue the combination of actual, electric light paired with the implied light within his landscape-based subject matter, in this case the Back Cove area of Portland.
His ‘Tone Scale’ series, an extension of his earlier, music-based ‘Fret’ series, also combines LEDs, but with another motif in mind -- the more emotional nature of particular labels and phrases which he finds mysterious and compelling. He exploits these emotion-laden terms with specific cycling rhythms of LEDs presented in mathematically organized format through intensive and imaginative electrical engineering with collaborator Guy Marsden. A look ‘behind the curtain’ – the reverse side of these works – reveals how the magic happens in complicated arrays of wiring and science. Inventive, artfully powerful, and emotionally relevant.
