About The Show

"In a way winter is the real spring, the time when the inner things happen, the resurge of nature.” – Edna O’Brien

We tend to view winter as a period of dormancy, quiet, dead.  In Maine, this view is reinforced by the exodus of migratory species and the “transhumance” of sorts of summer residents.  Summer's buzz of activity and autumn's brilliant colors are gone.

But are we being unfair to winter?  To the Anglo-Saxons, the term "winter" could be synonymous with "year."  Your age was measured by the number of winters you had lived.  We continue to celebrate the birth of a new year in winter.  After all, autumn sees the death of the new shoots of spring, not winter.  Instead, winter is responsible for ushering in spring.  Winter dreams spring into existence.

We curated this group exhibition with this original view of winter in mind.  The work in this show celebrates this gestational period and combines traditional winter scenes with the season's brighter vision for the future.
