Noriko Sakanishi: Dreams
March 2 - April 22, 2023
About the Show
If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time. - Marcel Proust
Noriko Sakanishi’s Dreams combines her elegant three dimensional constructions with resonant works on paper. Given the muted or monochrome palettes and hard, geometric lines of the work, the word “dreams” may not be the first to come to mind. However, the effect of standing within the show, immersed in Sakanishi’s non-objective world, suggests a type of expanded perception - perhaps allowing a glimpse of the "matrix" or grid-like structures and mathematical systems that undergird our individual and collective reality.
Often when viewing art, we do so through analogy. We process the picture through our own experiences and fit the work into our personal narrative. However, how do we view art with no immediate analog to lived experience? How do we confront artistic expression distilled beyond our familiar frame of reference? We have to enter the realm created by the artist on her terms instead of our own, giving ourselves over to her conjured reality. Entering, in a sense, a waking dream.
Dreams play an important part in my life and in my work. They are part of me and yet separate enough to guide me. Mostly, they tell me whether I am on the right track in my efforts to express myself through art.
