Menagerie a Trois
December 1, 2022 - January 21, 2023
Opening Reception: December 1, 5 - 7pm
About the Show
Curated with an eye toward conjuring a bit of seasonal magic, Menagerie a Trois brings together the animal-centric work of three accomplished Maine artists working in a variety of media. This installation is colorful, joyful, and at times whimsical. It taps into mankind’s eternal sense of wonder vis a vis the natural world as well as our fascination for the endless creativity of our own species, and for artists’ ancient and ongoing urge to represent and memorialize our planet’s non-human cohabitants.
Given the intergenerational appeal of Lisa Houck’s exuberant, narrative prints, paintings and mosaics depicting the somewhat anthropomorphized personal lives and internal motivations of various flora and fauna, Susan Amons’ more naturalistic but equally energetic takes on the habits and habitats of majestic creatures, wild and untamable, and Richard Remsen’s gorgeous and glittering jewel-toned art glass sculptures that elevate artifice (fishing lures, etc.) to art form, Menagerie is sure to be a popular attraction for extended families reuniting over the holidays.
And given the quality of the work and the perennial charm of its subject matter, there is an object for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. Truly perfect for holiday gifting!
