Statement:
When working on paintings I spend much of my time mixing pigments. Raw pigments are loaded with knowledge that invites discovery. Each pigment has a color that in its raw form needs to be released. For me, the urge is to turn the color into light. To find the energy that expresses the knowledge held inside.
Mixing pigments directly on the support is the most direct way to get the color moving. I blend dry pigments with glue and water and brush it out. I can repaint a surface several times a day. Always re-mixing pigments. Once I see the painting in front of me, I can zero in on where the painting wants to go. There is a point where the painting takes the lead. That's when my instincts kick in and, if I'm lucky, I'm in the effortless grace of the painting. The freedom of it. Think too much about what that is and you lose it.
In the last 60 years there have been hundreds of new pigments produced. Some of the newest pigments are light activated and can change dramatically as you move around them. Some can jump out across the room and grab you. I began experimenting with metal powders in the early 80's and soon moved on to the high tech world of light affected pigments that use micro thin coatings of oxides on mica to create colors that change with light. Like the eyes of a portrait painting, these colors follow you around the room. Increasingly, more of these mercurial high tech pigments have been produced.
Many surprises await our senses in the world of pigments.
