Peter Soriano

Schmelzwasser/Snowmelt #2 (2021)

Tree (2021)

Born in Manila, Philippines, Peter Soriano received his B.A. in Art History from Harvard College and studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. By the mid-1990s, following exhibitions in New York and Paris, he first earned international recognition for his deceptively playful, biomorphic sculptures made of fiberglass. In 2004, after a residency at the Atelier Calder in France, Soriano turned his focus to wall-based sculptures. Composed of taut steel cables, metal pipes, and rapid-fire sprays of painted arrows, Xs, circles, and brackets, these installations function in an ambiguous space at the intersection of painting and sculpture. In recent years, Soriano has eliminated structural elements altogether to introduce another body of work: wall drawings. These new works, which have been widely exhibited, evoke landscapes, albeit highly schematized landscapes in which Soriano’s spray-painted graphic lexicon of codes and symbols is the dominant source of imagery. Since 1994, Soriano has been represented in New York by Lennon, Weinberg, Inc. In Paris, he has since 1996 been represented by Galerie Jean Fournier. He divides his time between New York City and Penobscot, Maine.
