LaneCoArts in association with Cove Street Arts, will present a unique, full-length performance, “The Sky’s Floor” in the stunning 8000 sq. ft. multimedia center located in Portland, Maine at 6:00 pm on April 29 & 30, 2022. An educational workshop will be offered on Saturday April 30, 2022 at 2:00 pm.
The centerpiece of this event is a series of new paintings by well-known local artist, Margaret Lawrence, contemporary dance by choreographer Lane Gifford and LaneCoArts company members, and an original score by international composer Yin-Han Zoe Yang. Also featured will be video designed by Marcus Bonila/WORKedit. This exciting collaboration explores themes of climate and chaos theory and its relationship to social interaction and unrest.
“The Sky’s Floor” represents the interweaving of three creative voices in a full-length, site-specific performance, choreographed by Lane Gifford in collaboration with LaneCoArts dancers, visual artist Margaret Lawrence, and composer Yin-Han Zoe Yang. Chaos theory in nature is examined and translated to movement, sound, and visual art expression. When systems in nature become dislodged from a stable state, they go through a period of oscillation, swinging back and forth between order and chaos. This dance exhibit presents a layered perspective on the physical and scientific meaning behind chaos theory and its connection with our social and environmental anxiety. We convey motional turbulence in movement, visual art, music, and patterns of complexity that intersect towards states of equilibrium. “The Sky’s Floor” is performed by five talented dancers, based in New York City: Dominique Dobransky, Faustine Lavie, Caleb Patterson, Annie White, and Robert Rubama.
