Two Pines By The Thoroughfare (2002)

Join us on Thursday, September 24, 7 p.m., for an online artist talk by artist Jill Hoy regarding her late husband Jon Imber and our current exhibition of Imber’s work. This talk will be streamed live on Facebook.

Jon Imber (1955-2014) was a nationally respected Boston and Maine based painter of whom Pulitzer Prize winning art critic Sebastian Smee wrote: Imber has wrestled with different influences, different styles, and different subject matter all his life. The shifts in his case, have felt less tectonic than nimble, supple, full of yearning and mischief. Life, in Imber’s paintings, unfurls with wayward force, like a thick, flicked rope. It takes on vital cadences. It laughs at itself, too. All of Imber’s evolving styles and subject matter are represented in this exhibition — from his earliest figurative paintings and portraits (1980’s), to his studio and plein air landscapes (1990’s), to his later nearly abstract work (2000’s on). And finally, the poignant “goodbye” portraits of family and friends he made in the years leading up to his premature death of ALS in April of 2014.

Jill Hoy, Jon Imber’s widow, is a wonderful Maine artist in her own right with paintings in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art, Harvard Business School, Boston Public Library, Fidelity, John Hancock, and Art in the Embassies collections, among 700+ other private, public, and corporate collections.
